Our approach to lab testing.Updated 5 days ago
We test every lot of green coffee before it is imported, so any lot that does not meet our standards is rejected. Testing at this stage focuses on agricultural and environmental contaminants that can be introduced during growing, processing, and storage, including heavy metals, mycotoxins, pesticides, herbicides, and glyphosate. These tests are conducted on representative samples, alongside additional controls like certified organic sourcing, third-party audits, traceability, and strict processing and storage standards.
Roasted coffee testing is then used to verify the final product. This is conducted at least annually, and more frequently if needed. It includes testing for things like acrylamide, heavy metals, pesticide residues, and mycotoxins, as well as beneficial compounds naturally found in coffee, such as antioxidants including chlorogenic acids.
Results are evaluated against regulatory standards, organic certification requirements, and exposure science, and are also compared year over year to ensure consistency with our partner farms.
Lab testing is performed on the coffee itself rather than the brewed cup, unless noted otherwise. Brewing method, grind size, and extraction can all influence what ultimately ends up in the cup, so results are best understood as a representation of the coffee itself rather than a direct reflection of brewed values.
